Hello to Ana and Jonas and the SIDE Team

Criminal Instinct by Kelly Lynn Parra

Five years in prison or five years working as an undercover agent?

Not the easiest choice for Ana Moreno, who has a history of B and E convictions and a problem with authority. But it’s a decision she and four other felons are willing to make to stay out of a jail cell.

When a deadly shipment of Ecstasy heads for San Francisco, Ana’s team is sent to stop it. Ana’s task: get close to the handsome and dangerous Jonas Saven, right-hand man of a suspected drug dealer with a deadly agenda. As Ana uncovers a web of secrets, betrayal and revenge, her heated attraction to Saven grows.

But with time running out to stop the dangerous drug lord, Ana must complete her mission—even if it costs her everything…

Welcome to Ana Moreno’s world of danger, street drugs, and revenge!

Let me give you a little background on the SIDE team.  SIDE—Secret Informant Drug Enforcement—is a group of undercover recruits gathered to work the streets to ferret out illegal street drug trafficking.  However, these are not any ordinary recruits—this small group consists of criminals working for the good guys for a change.

Instead of spending years behind bars, they trade in their sentencing working for a no-holds-bar boss named Sarge and his sidekick Jay-man.  Sarge knows the recruits’ deepest, darkest secrets and is willing to use them against his team to clean the streets of the filth of drugs.

Sarge found Ana Moreno AKA Switch bruised and beaten with a history of petty crime and B and E arrests.  He knows she’s tough and will do anything to stay out of a cell.  He chose the following team for the same reasons:

~ Billy AKA Jax, a street fighter and jack of all trades when it comes to crime.

~ Aaron AKA Romeo, loves the ladies and their…money.

~ Julia AKA Digit, behind her beauty is an Einstein brain and way a with a computer that almost let her retire in style.

~ Paul AKA Skates, the youngest of the team, is like the Yellow Pages to the San Francisco street crime.

But Sarge has one question:  Can these recruits pull together to work as team or will they always merely look out for themselves?

The SIDE team is put to the test when a deadly shipment of Ecstasy heads for San Francisco. The program already has a bad rep and this is the team’s chance to show they can make a difference and actually do some good before the higher ups decide to pull the plug on the program.

The leading suspects?  A dangerous San Francisco street gang called The Black Dragons, a drug kingpin named Salvador Tyler, and Raymond Brooks, a businessman with strong Israeli drug connections and his right-hand man, Jonas Saven.

Jonas Saven is a complicated man, driven by a dark past, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy as all get out.  Here is a small excerpt where the reader first meets Jonas:

Thump—thump—thump.

Jonas Saven attacked the hanging punch bag with smooth, deliberate jabs.  Perspiration beaded down his naked chest.  Rotating his hips to the right, he pivoted on the ball of his left foot, bent his elbow, and shoved his weight into a lateral punch to the lower bag.  It crashed back toward him, he feinted to his right.  He countered, the force of his punch so hard the impact vibrated straight through the padded glove.

“I’m telling you, Jonas, it’s all his fault.”

Not now.  Sweat leaked into his eyes.  He blinked it away.

Thump—thump—thump.

“If it weren’t for you, where would he be?”

Jonas bounced on the balls of his feet, shifting his weight from foot to foot.  After beating the bag for an hour, the muscles in his arms and torso were already strained.  The slow burn that meant his limit was near.

Focusing on the bag, he pushed on.

Thump, thump—thump—thump.

“Jonas, are you hearing me?”

He glanced at his sister, observed her pace back and forth in front of his office couch, her long legs eating up space.  She halted, pointing her forefinger at him.

He swung out again.

Thump—thump.

“You’re the strength behind the gallery, the club, the operations.”

His gaze jerked to her.  His arms fell to his sides, damp shoulders rising with aggravated breaths.

Swallowing past his parched throat, he said, “What do you know about the operations?”

“Enough to know that you’re the one who takes care of everything.”

No, she didn’t know the truth.  “Kara, I’ve told you before. Ray runs everything fine.  Last night…”  He paused.  “Last night was out of his hands.”

She scoffed.  “Is that what he’s telling you?”

Jonas rubbed the sweat off his forehead with his forearm.  “When’s this obsession—”

“Pleease.

“—you have with Ray going to end?  There isn’t anyone I trust more.”  He looked at her point-blank when she flipped brunette layers of hair over her shoulder.  “Understood?”

She sneered, but even that disdainful look couldn’t mar her beautiful features.  “Don’t try to lay one of your commands on me this time, Jonas—because it’s not going to work.  Besides, you’re not my father.”

The blow hit its target.  He merely blinked, feeling his face go blank.

“Jonas, I didn’t mean—”

Not saying a word, he held up a gloved hand.

She sighed.  “You just make me so angry when you don’t listen.  Ray Brooks got someone killed last night and you could be next.”

Stevie.

His fault, no one else’s.  He whirled.

Thump—thump—thump—thump—thump.

Not just any woman can match this man’s strength, both mentally and physically.  But one tough as nails street narc could fit the role:

Ana flew through the air, landing on the training mat, her sweaty shoulders scraping against rubber.  Damn it!

“Up now, now!”

Gritting her teeth, she rolled to her feet and crouched, hands out, eyes straight on her opponent.  A few hairs escaped her headband, clinging annoyingly to her cheek, and sweat ran down her neck into her sports bra. Her muscles ached from two hours of physical training.

They circled each other.  Jax’s pale eyes never left hers, his hands out and ready.

“Rush him!”

“He’s a mountain,” she muttered.

“Do it!”

Her eyebrows furrowed, but she wasn’t dumb enough to glance at Sarge, giving Jax an open advantage.  Jax’s codename was based on a video game character with arms made of steel, steel that could pretty much pound her to a pulp.  His shaggy blond head was damp and his bare chest glistened with perspiration.  The guy’s right arm was solid with tatts, the left spotted with various designs, and his long legs were covered with gray sweat pants.

Jax gave a slow smile, taunting her with his thick fingers to come at him.

“I don’t give a damn how small you are—or how big he is—rush him.”

Fine. She feinted to her right, ducked low, and rammed her left shoulder into his hard stomach, wincing as the impact radiated down her back.

Jax’s footing slid on the mat and then dug in.  Bands of armor gripped around her slick waist, hauling her upside down, slamming her spandex-covered butt against his solid torso.

She hooked her legs over Jax’s broad shoulders, bending them on either side of his neck and squeezing her knees toward each other.

“Did I ever tell you I like my Latinas spicy and hot?” Jax grunted above her.

“Did I ever tell you I couldn’t give a flying f*ck?”  Blood rushed to her head.  She pressed harder with her knees, performed a full sit up, and aimed for a throat hit with her knuckles.

Jax’s eyes flickered.  He released her waist, gripped her biceps and shot her off of him like a damn slingshot.  She flew, hit padding, and tried to roll.

Too late.  Jax landed on her, knocking her air out of her lungs.  He grabbed one arm, trapping it against the mat.  His musky deodorant filled her nostrils, heavy chest pushing against hers.

Son of a—

“Pin!”

She sucked in air, coughed.  “B*tch.

Jonas and Ana should have fun fighting it out once they meet, don’t you think?

I hope you enjoyed a sneak peek into Ana Moreno’s world. The wonderful Carina Press is giving a free e-copy of Criminal Instinct to a blog visitor, as well as on Facebook and on Twitter. So there are three chances to win!

From Adult Reader…to Carina Press!

Hello, Carina Press Friends! I’m Kelly Lynn Parra and I will be debuting my first Romantic Suspense Criminal Instinct with Carina Press in June.  It is such an honor to be part of Carina’s launch and to be chatting with you.  I thought I’d kick off today by sharing my journey from reader to Carina…

What’s a girl who once lived to draw and paint, who found school reading a chore, doing writing novels?

Good question, and one I still sometimes hear from friends and family.  You see, it wasn’t until I was round with my first baby–trying to entertain myself during maternity leave–that I was given a book that went on to change my life’s path.

Now this wasn’t just any book, although I did not know this at the time.  It was a romance novel, obviously loved by someone else, yellowed from time, and bent around the edges.

From the first page, I was swept away to Ireland. Where I quickly learned more about those two main characters than I knew about some of my own family members.  I rooted for this man and woman, envisioned them in my mind so clearly that it seemed they had to be real. Yes, I was pregnant, I needed my sleep, but how could I not find out what would happen next?

Soon, I finished that book, closing it with a contented sigh.  I was in love.  Yes, I was in love with romance, and with Nora Roberts!

I went straight to the bookstore and waddled through the aisles until I found the other two books in the series.  The manager of the store was a Nora Roberts fan too. She showed me entire shelves of her books and backlist. *Instant reader bonding took place*

Can you take a guess of the trilogy?

The Born In trilogy:  Born in Fire, Born in Ice, and Born in Shame.   I did not know at the time, but I had started the series out of order.

The first magical romance I read was Born in Ice.

And there I became a voracious and dedicated romance reader.  Once I worked my way through all the Nora Roberts backlist I could find, I read her J.D. Robb books and fell in love all over again!  I think my husband thought I lost my mind.  From there, I read many Harlequin’s series books and that was when I read an author bio about a mom who was staying at home with her children and had become a romance writer.

My son was born and I continued reading more than ever.  My little home was becoming packed with as many books and bookshelves as Pampers and bibs!  So the idea of idea of writing while I stayed at home with him seemed like a daring, but doable venture.

Maybe just for fun.  Fun turned into passion.

I joined Romance Writers of America and on-line sister chapters.  I researched and took on-line workshops.  This passion had soared into a dream of publication!  I think my family humored me, sure, write your stories, they said.  Well, I did and I met other great aspiring writers on-line.  We learned to support each other and share our experiences.  I found a fabulous critique partner and wrote a very rough first book called Deadly Adam.  Then I met a wonderful mentor on-line who told me I had a good voice and I should write the next draft of this book to the best of my ability and submit it to agents.  It took me a year to rewrite it, and then it was time to query.  Many rejections and two offers of representation I had an agent. After another year of many rejections from publishers and rewrites, Deadly Adam sold to Harlequin Bombshell.

Yes, yes, YES!!  I couldn’t believe it!! My hard work had finally paid off. My dream would come true!!

Meanwhile, I had started writing young adult stories. Reflecting on my own teen years, there were never any books I was interested in during school.  I wanted to write something kids could relate to today.  I wrote Graffiti Girl and it sold, meanwhile I received some bad news.  The Bombshell line closed its doors. My first book, which I spent nearly two years writing and a year trying to sell, would not be published.

It was devastating not only to me, but the other Bombshell writers for their unpublished stories.  I cried like a baby.  I had grown to love my characters Ana and Jonas, their faults and their good qualities after all this time with them. Yes, I would be published in young adult but it was tough to say goodbye to them.  I wiped my tears and continued to write.

So jump ahead a few years later.  I heard about this new and fresh e-press opening called Carina Press.  I thought about Deadly Adam.  I thought about Ana and Jonas, and I took a chance and submitted the novel after some sprucing up and gave it a new name of Criminal Instinct.   The day I received the good news email from Angela James my chest tightened and my eyes watered.

My first romance would finally be published.

Thank you, Carina Press, you helped a writer complete a long-sought-after journey. And in support of Carina, I will treat one visitor today to any pick of a Carina Press’s digital launch titles.  All you have to do to enter is leave a blog comment.

I hope when Criminal Instinct is released in June you’ll meet Ana and Jonas…  Stay tuned for my next post so I can introduce them to you.

Hubble’s New Close-Up of Carina Nebula

Over the weekend, in celebration of their 20th anniversary, Hubble released an amazing new picture of the Carina nebula. This picture is meant to celebrate and represent the 20th anniversary celebration, and it is certainly breathtaking! I couldn’t resist sharing it since we’re getting ready to enter the next stage in our journey to launch (details tomorrow), so I’m going to take this picture as a good omen and sign of wonderful things to come.

For the full article, see Science News here, but a small clip of the article:

With a smorgasbord of heavenly images and celestial targets to choose from, it wasn’t easy picking a portrait to celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope’s 20th anniversary. But after a debate that began last year, Hubble astronomers finally settled on taking a new, close-up portrait of part of the Carina nebula, a dramatic star-forming region that Hubble first captured in 2007 with a less sophisticated camera.

“We wanted to have an image that will be at least as spectacular as the iconic ‘pillars of creation,’ says Mario Livio of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, referring to a widely reproduced 1995 Hubble image of the Eagle Nebula.

And the photo? Gorgeous. I want this on a poster. Or some futuristic cover art. That would be cool, no?

Leah Braemel interviews editor Rhonda Stapleton

Hi from southern Ontario Canada, home of Harlequin’s headquarters. And me, Leah Braemel. I’m the only woman in a houseful of men—heck, even my cat Spike is male. It’s my life’s mission to avoid the dust bunnies that are taking over the house by hiding out in my office writing steamy romances like my upcoming Carina release, Texas Tangle. I was thrilled when Angela invited me to interview my editor, Rhonda Stapleton. When I learned that I could give Rhonda a deadline instead of the other way around, it was that much more fun.

Leah: Since I’ve not met you in person (yet), I want to know more about you. Is there something unusual that you do or have done that people normally don’t know or would be surprised to know about you? Are you an avid ghost hunter? Have you ever gone sky diving?

Rhonda: Oooooh intriguing question. Um, here’s one: I have a HUGE backpiece tattoo. It takes up my entire back. It’s a Japanese samurai woman with a background taken from a Japanese woodblock painting done in the 1800s. At the top is a phoenix flying.

Leah (cringing): Wow, that sounds intricate. And painful. I freely admit I’m a wimp. I nearly passed out getting my ears pierced, so I can’t imagine subjecting myself to a needle for that long. It must make for an interesting conversation at the beach.

I glance at the ceiling in an effort to figure out what Spike’s staring at. Yet again he’s psyched me out—there’s nothing there, silly cat. What were we talking about again? Something about a beach? Hmm, that gives me an idea for my next question:  if you were stranded on a deserted island and could bring only three books from your keeper shelf, what books would they be? (see how skillfully—not—I worked in the beach reference?)

Rhonda: OMG I can’t even answer this. It’s like asking me to choose between my kids. haha. I can give you genres though–YA contemporary, adult futuristic, and adult historical.

Leah: Hmm, should I be worried that there are no erotic romances on that list? Maybe I should slip a copy of Texas Tangle into your emergency bag when you’re not looking. Oh, right, you’ve gone over it so many times editing, you probably have it memorized by now.

I lean back in my chair and toy with my pen in an attempt to appear professional. (Ooops, too late, I’m pretty sure my flannel pajamas have destroyed that image.) While we’re on the subject of editing, writers know that editing is not just about grammar and punctuation, it’s so much more. But for those non-writers who are reading this, can you share your process when you’re editing a manuscript? What do you look for to make a story better?

Rhonda
: The first thing I do is a read-through of the story. As I read, I make notes about things I notice that need to be tweaked or clarified or may be potential issues. After that, I do a thorough digging in, looking at the big-picture issues: plot, setting, pacing, character, etc. All those things that affect the storyline and how it progresses. Are characters consistent and engaging? Is the setting relevant and present? Is the pacing appropriate to the scene and to the story? After that, I do my nit-picky round, where I look at the language and word usage–is there too much repetition/similarity between sentences, or word choice? Is the language vivid, concrete, and specific enough with sensory detail?

LeahI stifle a groan and mutter about sensory detail as I stab another pin into my Rhonda voodoo doll (Ooops, you weren’t supposed to see that!) For the writers who are reading this, what are your pet peeves that turn you off a manuscript?

Rhonda: Too much info drop is a huge pet peeve. It slows down the pacing and pulls me out of the immediate story. I also don’t like characters who are overdramatic or who don’t react as a normal person would. If your character is unreasonable and petty, I am totally not going to want to read the story.

Leah:  Overdramatic? I wouldn’t know anyone like that! I quickly change the subject. What type of story would you love to find in the submission pile?

Rhonda: I really want interesting locales or time periods you don’t normally read about. I love reading about unusual places and eras. I adore futuristics, contemps, historicals–really, any genre of romance works for me. I love anything from a sweet story to a super-spicy one, so long as there is romantic and sexual tension there. I also loooove Asian culture and would love more submissions that are multicultural.

Leah
(making notes for her own future submissions): Not only are you an editor, but you’re also an author. How do you balance your time between writing, editing and having a life? (You do have a regular life, don’t you? Or is that a set of shackles around your ankle binding you to your computer?)

Rhonda: Wow, good question! Um, not having much of a life right now, but I’m trying! haha. I do a lot of multitasking, and I set aside dedicated time for each task.

Leah (guessing that Rhonda’s wondering if this interview will ever be over, especially from the way she keeps eyeing the door and checking her watch):  Thanks, Rhonda. Or and um, about that doll with the pins? It’s for, um, research. Honest!

You can follow Rhonda and Leah on Twitter. You can also check out Rhonda’s excellent editing of Leah’s Texas Tangle when it releases in June.

Week 24…oooh, do we have plans!

Last week, I spent a tremendous amount of time planning. Yes, I’ve done that a lot these past months because when you’re starting a new business/imprint, that’s what you do. Plan for this, that and the other. But last week I was kicked into high gear to plan for…something. I can’t tell you what exactly I was planning for, but I can tell you that you’re going to want to pay special attention to this blog on Thursday. Why? Oh, no reason (psst…an announcement, maybe a giveaway–or many giveaways– and some massive information…but you didn’t hear it from me, k?)

But I wasn’t just planning for the thing that I can’t give you any details of (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) but I also had to plan for this week, where I’ll be at the Romantic Times convention. As I shared last week, I have a number of workshops, spotlights and a speech to plan for. Romantic Times is always an incredibly busy conference for me and this year is certainly no exception. So I planned for that.

I wasn’t done yet, though. I’m also doing a webinar for publishers and industry professionals (or anyone who’s interested in the topic and wants to attend, it’s free!) on May 4th about going digital, and challenges that can be faced, process that can be used. Jenny Bullough will be joining me to help out with that since our topic is just one of the many areas in which she’s full of awesome and knowledge. That’s just two days after I return from RT, so I needed to plan for that as well. But one of the wonderful, amazing, awesome things about working within the Harlequin system is that all I had to do was compile my notes, outline some specifics of what I needed, and Jenny sent them off to the Desktop department. Within hours, we had back a complete PowerPoint presentation. It would have taken me an entire day to prepare that (I can do PowerPoint but it’s certainly not a forte!) Hurray for support systems! We couldn’t do it without them, so many thanks to Maria at Harlequin for our spiffy PowerPoint presentation.

Since this Friday, April 30th, is our final production deadline for our launch titles, I also spent much time poking the poor editors. “Are you done yet? How about now? Soon? In an hour? Oh, two days? How about now?” Hahaha, poor editors! I also spent time going over some production files, emailing with editors and authors, and copyeditors, and basically stressing about getting it all done by next Friday. While gearing up for a major…something I can’t tell you about (see above) and planning for that because in the midst of it all…did I mention I’m traveling to RT. Bad timing!

The one thing I didn’t get done, because I had to triage my to-do list, was submissions. I apologize to everyone waiting for responses, updates or otherwise, but it just wasn’t possible. I’ll be making that a priority for the first week of May, because it has to get done and you all need an update!

I will tell you one other thing I planned for. May 5th, which I’ve officially termed the day I destress after several weeks of craziness. We’ll be heading to DC that afternoon for a special Cinco de Mayo soccer game and tailgaiting. I can’t wait!

So that’s my week. And oh, hey, if you’re not following the Carina Facebook page, you missed out on a ton of new covers last week (and today). Plus, you’ll be wanting to follow it later this week for…stuff I can’t talk about (see above).

Oh, before I forget! I’ll be doing a special contest/giveaway from RT for our Twitter followers, so tune in there. More details to come about that later today or tomorrow, here on the blog.

Shirin Dubbin interviews editor Kym Hinton

For this Author-Editor Q&A I turned on the spotlight, donned a hardboiled detective demeanor and asked the probing and utterly inappropriate questions you all want answers to. Kym ignored me. I switched tactics. My name is Shirin Dubbin, graphic artist and aspiring raconteur. My addiction is storytelling—mainly Urban Fantasy with strong romantic elements. Come meet my sponsor.

SD: You’ve chosen a career wrangling authors and corralling runaway plotlines. I’m fairly sure I’m not the only writer with a Circle C (©) brand of crazy so I have to ask: What were you thinking and how did it start?
(Sorry. All these genre tropes keep getting stuck in my head, plus I’ve been listening to Brooks and Dunn.)

KYM: I’ve always had an affinity for words and have worked as a newspaper proofreader, a journals editorial assistant, and the managing editor at a pharma advertising agency. Editing fiction was always the dream, but I knew moving to NY was a no-go, so in grad school, I applied for a volunteer proofing position with an e-publisher, and the rest is history. Working with authors is awesome, and there’s rarely any wrangling involved. Most of the time, if there are disagreements, the author and I can talk them out and find a happy medium that pleases us both.

SD: If you could write yourself into any book, TV show, movie or play what would it be and who would be your love interest?

KYM: Oh my! That’s a tough one. Can I pick two?

SD: Of course!

KYM: I would love to be Sydney Bristow from Alias, and I’d turn traitor for Julian Sark (David Anders). I’m all about kicking butt while looking amazing, and traipsing around the world as a super-spy who could just as easily kill a man as kiss him would be a fantastic job. But I also wouldn’t mind being Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy. She’s so driven and not easily broken, but I’d take Dr. Avery (Jesse Williams) over Owen Hunt any day.

SD: Sounds like a hit show. Dr. Kym Hinton—secret agent—repairs hearts, kicks ass, and loves only one man: Dr. Avery Sark, double agent and saboteur. Sparks and scalpels fly this fall on FOX.

SD: What is guaranteed to hook you, even in a flawed book, and what will send you running, even if a book is well written?

KYM: Characterization is always a deal breaker. If the characters are just flat, one-dimensional words on the page, I’ve got no reason to care what happens to them. In particular, I’m easily hooked by broken heroes who needs to find love to put themselves back together again. When their lives are falling apart, and they’re on a downward spiral, I get so invested in the happily ever after, and I love when the strong/capable heroine (or hero) swoops in and is able to put aside the flaws to see the person underneath and stay with him through thick and thin until they find a way to make it work. The thing that sends me running is anything or (shudder) everything listed in the CP “Reasons for Rejection” post. Your editor isn’t there to serve as a critique partner or clean up typos that spell-check could catch, but rather to help you make what’s already polished shine. If the first few chapters read like you didn’t take the time to self-edit and remove backstory/build conflict, I’m already on to the next one.

SD: Ahh, for question 3B: Who is your top broken hero of all time?

KYM: In contemporary fiction, Doug Parker in Jonathan Tropper’s How to Talk to a Widower. In romance, Zsadist in J.R. Ward’s Lover Awakened.

SD: You’re big into fitness: running, kick boxing, wine drinking (rightly so; red wine is good for the heart and the sanity). What other pursuits do you enjoy?

KYM: You’ve about covered it. I work from home and freelance full-time, so other than those things, I’m actually pretty boring. Anyone who follows me on Twitter knows that if I’m not reading, editing, or working out, I’m probably in bed trying to fall asleep (insomnia is for the birds), researching/buying wine, or twiddling my thumbs while I wait for football season. Come August, the only addition to the list will be watching the Indianapolis Colts make it to the playoffs again.

SD: Last year’s Super Bowl was definitely a tough end to a great season for the Colts. Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming Carina Press titles and why you’re excited about them, or what made you pluck them from the slush pile? Just a few one-liners; I won’t tell a soul…
[Harp playing in the background]

KYM: Well, with Dreams’ Dark Kiss, it was the first sub I’d read that made me laugh out loud, but it’s got a darker, harder edge too (how do you toe that line so well?). Your surfer hero cracked me up, and I could never resist a heroine whose weapon of choice is a frying pan.

SD: Oh, you charmer you! I find being slightly off-center helps in blending darker imagery with humor; just a spoonful of wacky helps the creepiness go down…

KYM: I just wrapped up edits for Savage Sanctuary by Jacqueline Barbary, a GLBT paranormal novella with two drool-worthy heroes caught up in a resistance between shifters and the scientists who created them. The story is full of rich imagery, so it was easy to become immersed and fully invested in the shifters’ survival. The Panther’s Lair by Esmerelda Bishop is a steamy erotic paranormal with a heroine who gets more than she bargained for when she tries to have a one-night stand. Its balance of snappy wit and steam grabbed me, and it’ll be a nice summer read. And most recently, first-time author Harper Fox’s Life After Joe, a character-driven GLBT contemporary with a broken hero (see question 3) that I stayed up till 3 a.m. to finish. My favorite line is when the hero’s undecided about the guy who’s going to help pick up the pieces of his fractured life, and is trying to decide if he should resist. He thinks, “I should at least appear a little bit harder to get, shouldn’t I? But I didn’t have the strength. Not to say no to the sunlight.” Harper’s for sure going to break some hearts with that one.

SD: Very cool! Before we say good-bye, and get back to work (did you hear a whip crack?), there are a few genres you’re hoping to find among Carina submissions. Please share your wish list.

KYM: I’ll edit any genre Carina accepts with the exception of horror, mystery, and inspirational. We’ve got other editors who would love to receive those submissions, though, so never fear! In particular, it’s no secret I’m dying for a medical romance. I’ve got my fingers crossed someone puts me out of my misery soon in that regard. Otherwise, I’m a big fan of GLBT stories and would love to see more that are sweet, nonerotic, or romantic comedies (though you can send the erotic ones too). And you already know I have a soft spot for broken heroes, but I also love stories with multicultural characters (another reason Dreams’ Dark Kiss caught my eye), heroines who can kick butt and take care of themselves, and emotional, conflict-driven plots that put me through the wringer. I don’t care if you make me laugh or make me cry, but as long as you can make me feel something, I want to read your book.

That’s a great way to end the Q&A! However, Kym and I are chatty so if you’ve got more questions or simply want to dish please fire away…
