If I were to ask people to name a hectic time of year, I bet a lot of them would say Christmas. Back to school days. Or maybe the end of the school year. The dreaded tax season. But things get really hectic at my house during the fall premieres on television. We have one TV and one DVR, and balancing our must-see shows with new shows we want to try requires charts and highlighters and precision planning.
Paige Sullivan, the heroine of All He Ever Needed doesn’t own a television, but if she did, I bet she’d like The Gilmore Girls and Parenthood and, reaching back a bit, Northern Exposure. She’s spent her entire life looking for a sense of family and community and, though she’s found it in Whitford, Maine, I think those shows would still appeal to her. And maybe shows like Masterchef and Hell’s Kitchen, because she owns the diner.
Mitch Kowalski’s a different kind of guy. Sometimes the whole family and community thing is a bit much for him, and one of his favorite things about his job is the travel. As to what kind of shows he’d probably watch? When Paige asked him how he came to work in controlled demolition (imploding buildings), he said:
“I’d always had an interest in buildings and engineering. During college I got a part-time job with a demo company. Small stuff, mostly. But I had an eye for it—the ability to see how any action would impact the structure. After I got my degree, I signed on with a good company and built up my résumé and my skill set until I could get the loan and backing to go out on my own. I get to secretly be a math and science geek and still have the coolest job in the room.”
So he “blows stuff up”, but his passion is for the engineering and the science of controlled demolition. He’d probably enjoy CSI and Criminal Minds, but he’d mix them up with adventurous fare like Hawaii 5-0 and Justified.
With the fall premieres right around the corner, which returning show are you most looking forward to? And which new show has most piqued your interest?

I think Mitch might also like Mythbusters because they love blowing stuff up.
We watch a bunch of shows on USA network and they do split seasons. We don’t have the issue with fall premiers. Whew!
Season premiere week is sacred in my house. And the fact that Glee is now on opposite Greys Anatomy is already giving me fits. In addition to those, waiting desperately for Castle, HIMYM, Big Bang, and the new Elementary & Revolution (to name but a few).
Before TIVO/PVRs (it’s different in Canada) I had 3 VCRs and spent an hour color coding my TV Guide every Saturday morning so I knew what show was recorded on what VCR.
The start of the fall tv season is sacred to me. Usually I create an excel spreadsheet that I share with friends, but I seem to be busy this year, so if anyone has created one do pass it along!
When I first got my PVR I went a little crazy – recording 2 new shows for every 1 watched. When I realized I was getting no sleep I had an intervention on myself.
I run a TV site, so I’m going to go crazy with all the new and returning shows. Thankfully, a lot of the new shows have premiered early (either on air or online), so I’m trying to watch what ones I can ahead of time.
For new dramas, Last Resort (available online) is amazing, but for ones I haven’t seen, I’m most excited about Arrow and Elementary. Revolution didn’t live up to the hype, but I’m hoping it gets a second episode. For new comedies, Go On and The Mindy Project are solidly funny.
For returning dramas, I’m really looking forward to how Once Upon a Time will evolve this season. And as far as comedies go, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the gang at Greendale (Community)!
Malle, do you get Entertainment Weekly? Their fall preview issue had a pull out chart.
And Mitch would LOVE Mythbusters! I didn’t even think of that because it’s been ages since my boys watched it. Although he’d probably grumble through it a lot and pick apart some of their recreations.
One of the nice things about modern technology is that, while the scheduling of “our” shows is still a headache and a half, I don’t have to plead my case for shows I want to try but my husband doesn’t. I just catch them online or wait a bit and buy the season passes on iTunes.
I think the show we’re most hopeful for is Last Resort. We’ve both been fans of Andre Braugher since Homicide.
Once Upon A Time was our surprise favorite of last year. We were iffy about it, but it was amazing. And my husband enjoyed it as much as I did.
And now that I’ve read that Castle isn’t going with a “let’s pretend this never happened” angle, I’m looking forward to watching them stomp all over the Moonlighting curse.
And Amazing Race and Survivor will be back! We’ve never missed a season of either show.
I’m going to have to drop some long-running favorites this year. My TiVo only records 2 shows at a time, so Hawaii 5-0 is getting bumped in favor of Revolution, and Big Bang Theory is getting bumped for something. Last Resort, maybe? I figure those two are easy enough to catch up with.
Season Premiere week has been an event in my family for years, so it’s one of my favorite weeks. I do wish they’d premiere ALL the shows in one week, though, instead of making us wait for things like Arrow and Supernatural!
