His Roommate’s Pleasure is my first book for Carina Press, and it tells the story of Adam and Josh. They’re college roommates who discover they have a lot more in common than just being randomly paired up by campus services after Adam accidentally stumbles upon Josh’s porn collection. Not only did Adam not have any clue that popular jock Josh was gay, he really, really didn’t have any clue that the kinds of things Josh has saved in his porn folder on his computer were things that people—and by people, we mean Adam—could want. Finding out that Josh was into collars and leashes and spanking and domination and more besides changes everything… but could it mean more than just sex?
Adam didn’t know why he’d never considered dating a guy that looked like Josh before, instead of wasting his time crushing on skinny blond hipsters who never seemed to want him back.
I didn’t set out to write a book. If anything, this whole writing experience can be laid firmly at the door of my very good friend Jenn, who gets me through the working week by sending me copious emails, and shares my appreciation for ever expanding the range of different tea bags in my tea cupboard at home. Tell me a story! she said, and so I did, and this was the result (if you don’t have a Jenn of your very own, I recommend finding one). Not only that, but she suggested I submit it, and she was the first person I told when the email from Carina arrived in my inbox. Unfortunately, I was on a train at the time, listening to my iPod on the way across the country to fly to Norway for a family wedding. Unfortunately, because my iPod was playing a terribly embarrassing cheesy pop track which is now number one on my His Roommate’s Pleasure playlist. (I always have a playlist. Half the fun is putting it together, and seeing which Abba track makes the cut).
There’s always an Abba track.
(I have to admit that the good news about my book did serve to make the most embarrassing experience of my life so far slightly easier to bear. Let’s just say it involved a lot of mud, some nettles, the Norwegian countryside, a very handsome groomsman, the ruination of my favourite pair of shoes, and the misinterpretation of all of these things in such a way that I can never quite explain away, much to my lingering embarrassment, but let’s not dwell on that).
So. Enough of that. There are three things in particular that I love in a romance story, kinky or otherwise:
I think it was always fairly clear to me that whatever story I wrote was going to have to incorporate at least one of those things. It ended up being all three. Adam and Josh aren’t friends at the beginning. They’re not not-friends, but let’s just say that they haven’t looked beyond the obvious. Adam’s a bit of a nerd, and Josh is a jock, and Adam’s had enough experience with jocks in high school to know what they’re like. Josh is popular, and plays sports, and Adam would rather watch a Coen brothers marathon with his friends Curtis and Lakshmi. Can it be that their initial assumptions about the other are wrong? And kink. Kink. I love kink. I love people discovering kink, and learning about it, and finding someone to share that with. It feels very intimate to me, that, so I wanted to put all of that into His Roommate’s Pleasure.
It started with an accidental click…but where will it end?
Desperate to turn in a paper, Adam borrows his roommate’s computer and mistakenly opens a folder that contains Josh’s collection of porn. Adam had no idea that his jock roommate was gay–and into leashes, paddles and domination. And Adam, an inexperienced virgin who’s only ever kissed one guy, is surprised to find himself curious about submitting…
Josh can’t believe that his roommate discovered his spank bank–and he can’t believe that Adam is so turned on by the thought of giving up control to someone. Taking a chance, he offers to look through the photos with Adam…and maybe try acting some of them out.
Night after night, the boys delve into their darkest fantasies of domination and submission. And as lust and experimentation grow into the promise of something deeper, Adam must decide if he’s brave enough to tell Josh how he feels.
