Back-to-School Shopping Guide for Writers

Even though the new year for most people begins in January, there’s no denying that the back-to-school season is a fresh start for students and lifelong learners alike. New routines, renewed motivation, and refreshed optimism are all great reasons to tackle that blank screen/notebook that you’ve been staring at for far too long. Here are a few things to help make the 2016–2017 school year the one where you get published.

  1. writing t-shirt
OK, so maybe it’s not that bad, but sometimes it feels that way. Just because you’re not solving world peace, doesn’t mean you’re not working hard.

  1. wine markers
Write drunk. Edit sober. Capture all of your great ideas and rehash them once you can tolerate noise and bright lights.

  1. planner
The only thing that will help you write your book faster than actually writing is planning out every single detail. Hey, if anyone asks, you’re very busy.

  1. tracker
It’s easy to get caught up in all you have to do and discount the great work you’re doing. So whether you put a sticker in your planner/calendar for each day you hit your writing goal or use a more formal form of recognition, ALWAYS remember that each day’s accomplishments are worth acknowledging.

  1. Everyone knows that the best way to get ideas for writing is by reading. Luckily for you, with books covering the gamut of genres from romance to erotic to paranormal to gay to historical, Carina Press has you covered.

  1. swedish berries
Productive writers require nourishment (and motivation). Reward yourself with one Swedish berry for every 100 words written.

  1. Updated-Carina-Wants-post-for-blog
Now that you have all the tools you need to write your book, make sure you know all you can about finding a home for it.

Get to it, writers! May this school year be your most rewarding yet!

What Kind of Boyfriend Material Are You Looking For?

By K.A. Mitchell, author of BOYFRIEND MATERIAL

Before GETTING HIM BACK, Wyatt had spent a year wondering what it would be like to have a boyfriend like Ethan. Now that Ethan is in Wyatt’s life—and spectacularly in his bed when they can find the privacy—Wyatt isn’t sure he’s cut out for being a boyfriend, at least not the kind Ethan wants. That got me thinking about the different kinds of boyfriends many of us have had. Some of the types have clear warning signals to back off, and some of them are keepers. This quiz pairs different choices with different types of boyfriends. What are you looking for? Wyatt might tell you to be careful what you wish for. Landing a boyfriend is only the first part of the story.

Take the quiz to see what kind of boyfriend material you’re looking for!

Ethan & Wyatt, book two

Physically, it’s easy for Ethan and Wyatt to be together—well, if “easy” means stolen moments when Ethan’s roommate is away, or sneaking away to a hidden nook in the library. Privacy is hard to come by in a dorm, but finding ways to connect is half the fun.

Emotionally, though, that’s a different story. Wyatt isn’t sure if a relationship is something he can make last—years of having to hide his emotions have left him with a shaky sense of self-confidence. And when it’s time to head home for the holidays, their steamy on-campus connection may not translate so well to the real world…

Five Things I Love About Bear Shifters

By Kerry Adrienne, author of WAKING THE BEAR

Bear shifters are becoming more common and that makes me happy. I love bear shifters—to me, they are sexy and a bit mysterious. And very, very alpha male. For a while, most shifter stories were about wolves—which is fine to me because I love wolf shifters, too. But in the last year or two, more shifter types have been in the spotlight. Lions (both mountain lions and African lions), ravens, dragons, and even unicorns have been written as shifters! I do love reading them all, but bears are my favorite.

Here’s why:

1)  Bears are both big and alpha and also cuddly and sweet (at least in books). When a bear or his family is threatened—you better watch out because he will defend his family. Same with the female bear—the saying “mama bear” came about for a reason. Get between a mama bear and her cubs? She will tear you apart. I love that kind of loyalty toward family.

2) There are lots of kinds of bears to choose from! Grizzlies, Polar Bears, brown bears, black bears… So many options when matching personalities to types of bear. I grew up in the mountains of NC where the bears are small and cute. Except if you mess with a bear and its family (see #1.

3) Bear hugs are the best! Who doesn’t like to have a strong and loving hug from their mate? The best hugs are bear hugs!

4) Bears are strong. When I think of bears, I think of all the power they can wield with one swipe of a paw. To me, this strength conveys well into an alpha hero. Bears can fight when they need to.

5). Some bears semi-hibernate. I think it’s adorable that they sleep a lot in the winter. But though they can go a hundred days without food and water, they often wake in the winter for brief periods of time. They are easily roused from their sleep and if you are hiking in winter, be aware, you can wake a sleeping bear—and he/she isn’t going to be happy about it! I find this physiological process so interesting. Plus, I’d love to be able to sleep and have fat just melt away.

My bear shifters sleep a lot in the winter, but they are also up and about a good bit so they can keep the Deep Creek National Park safe. Other bear shifter stories take a different path but I love that there are so many ways to write bears!

Shifter Wars, book one

Sexy shifter passion is awakened when two unlikely lovers are challenged by secrets, danger and an unstoppable need to claim one’s mate…

For human Amy Francis, the secluded cabin in Deep Creek is the haven she needs to map out a fresh new start. She never expected her heart to be reawakened by a distraction like Griff Martin, commanding yet gentle, too ferociously sensual to ignore. It’s clear that patrolling the forest is more than a job to Griff—it’s a means of survival. But what Amy doesn’t realize is she’s reawakened the beast within him.

Griff’s dormant hunger is stirred by this intoxicating woman…and threatened by the secret she must never learn. Duty-bound to defend his bear clan against an avenging pride of lion shifters, Griff’s entire world is upended when he meets Amy. His animal need to claim his mate has taken hold, but that very desire could seal her fate as an unwitting pawn in battle.

Now, as a shifter war looms, Griff must decide between letting Amy go or following his most carnal instincts. To have her would change his life…but risk everything he knows and was born to protect.

Suspenseful Reads You Just Can’t Miss!

The Stranger by Anna del Mar

lgcover.9781459294301When a mysterious stranger is your only hope…

The scars of the past have left their mark, both physical and emotional, on former military pilot Seth Erickson. Off-grid in the far reaches of the bitter Alaskan wilderness, he wants only to be left alone with his ghosts. But he can’t ignore a woman in need—beautiful, stranded and nearly frozen with fear.

Summer Silva never imagined that the search for her missing sister would leave her abandoned on a wintry back road, barely escaping with her life from a cold-blooded killer for hire. Now, hiding out in the isolated cabin of the secretive wounded warrior who saved her, Summer knows she must do what she fears most. Putting her trust in a stranger is all she has left.

All defenses are down

After a fiery first night together, Seth and Summer are bound by a need as powerful as a Bering Sea superstorm—and vulnerable to enemies just as fierce. For Seth, reawakened by desire, there is no sacrifice too great, no memory too dark, to keep Summer safe. But murder and treason lurk everywhere and Summer may not survive Alaska’s ruthless winter.

One Minute to Midnight by Nico Rosso

lgcover.9781459290488He was her safety.

She was his backup.

Former navy SEAL Ben Jackson knows that sexy “Mary Long” is nothing but a cover; that beneath the stylish clothes and flirty smile is a stone cold super-soldier no one ever gets close to. Until her kiss hits him like one of her sniper rounds. But Morris Flats is no place for a hookup—menace hums through the town, and the more the two operators keep pushing for answers, the more deadly the current seems to run.

For former Special Forces sniper Mary Kuri, flirting with her muscular teammate feels like playing with fire. It’s hard to tell where the cover ends and the real feelings begin. What she does know is they can’t afford to lose focus. Their mission is to gather evidence, and with the gunrunners watching their every move, a single mistake could prove fatal.

It’s two against the world, and Ben and Mary are about to discover that not only do the lives of innocent people hang in the balance, but they’re also fighting to save the rare connection they’ve found with each other.
