Why I write warriors

The Sergeant's Lady cover

I didn’t grow up as an Army brat, but my family has a long tradition of military service. My father enlisted in the Army after high school and was stationed in West Germany for two years before coming home to marry my mother. (Remember West Germany and the Cold War? That world is starting to seem almost as distant as the eras I choose for my stories!) One of my older brothers is a former Marine, and another started West Point the same year I started kindergarten. (Believe it or not, he’s my youngest older brother. I was my parents’ surprise unexpected bonus child when they thought they were done!)

Going back through the generations, my ancestors fought in the Civil War, the American Revolution, and who knows what conflicts before that–since I’m part Scottish, English, and French, it’s entirely possible I had ancestors on both sides of many of the battles I read about in history class.

So I come by my interest in military history honestly, but the soldier who was most on my mind and heart during the creation of The Sergeant’s Lady was my oldest nephew. He’s an officer in the National Guard, and when I wrote my first draft, he was stationed in Iraq. When I decided to submit to Carina, he was serving in Afghanistan, arriving home a month to the day before the book sold. Writing a soldier hero was a way to honor him and men like him. Tactics, technology, and uniforms change, but courage and honor are constants.

Incidentally, when I say that technology changes, I don’t just mean the obvious things like weaponry. While Nathan was in Afghanistan, every time I heard about something horrible happening there, I’d rush to Facebook to check how recently he’d updated his status. Two centuries ago I would’ve had to wait weeks or months.

Back when I was first writing The Sergeant’s Lady, I decided that if it ever sold, I would donate a portion of my royalties to a group providing help to soldiers or veterans in need. At the risk of drifting into political territory, I think as a society we’re all too often better at flag-waving than at any kind of tangible show of gratitude to the men and women who sacrifice so much for their country.

I’ve decided to donate to the Yellow Ribbon Fund, an organization that provides services, lodging, and activities for injured service members and their families at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital. I hope some of my readers will consider supporting them or a similar organization as well. Because wars change, but warriors don’t.

Early influences

The Sergeant's Lady cover

Hi, I’m Susanna Fraser, and I’m delighted that my debut historical romance, The Sergeant’s Lady, is available on virtual bookshelves this week.

One of the many things I love about working with Carina is their enthusiasm for historicals that travel off the beaten path in one way or another.  To name just two examples, there’s Liz Fichera’s Captive Spirit, featuring a Native American heroine in what is now Arizona at the very beginning of European contact, and Carrie Lofty’s Song of Seduction, starring musicians in 1804 Austria.

The Sergeant’s Lady takes place in 1811-12.  The hero is English, the heroine, Scottish.  So far, so typically Regency, right?  Not exactly.  The vast majority of the action takes place with Wellington’s army fighting the French on the Iberian Peninsula.  And the hero, Will Atkins, is a common sergeant.  Not a long-lost heir to a title, not a gentleman slumming, but an outwardly ordinary man who ran away to join the army as a youth out of an abiding curiosity to discover what lay beyond the hills surrounding his native village.

Why did this story call to me?  I believe its roots go back to the very first romances I read back in high school: Sunfire YA historicals and traditional Regencies.

For those of you who don’t remember the Sunfire line, each book featured a sixteen-year-old heroine living through a compelling piece of American history, anywhere from Jamestown right on up to Pearl Harbor.  I liked them better than contemporary YA romances because instead of just going to high school and hoping a boy would notice her, like I was doing myself, the heroine got to do big things and witness important events.  Her choices could have life-or-death consequences, and the book almost always ended with her engaged to marry the hero.  The stakes were higher, there was scope for adventure, and I loved that.

Many Sunfires featured romance across class and/or cultural barriers.  I honestly never even realized this before I sat down to write this blog post, but all my favorites featured an upper-class girl with a more “blue collar” boy, from genteel Marilee falling for her brother’s indentured servant at Jamestown to spoiled Amanda learning to be strong and self-reliant from farmer boy Ben on the Oregon Trail to society girl Nicole daring to love steerage immigrant Karl on the Titanic.  (If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like the James Cameron movie you’d be right, but the Sunfire book predates it by a decade or so.)

At the same time I was buying almost every Sunfire as soon as it came out, I was starting to read traditional Regency romances because they were the only adult romances I could bring home without my mother looking askance at the covers.  I enjoyed the picture they painted of a world so unlike my own and was fascinated whenever they hinted at the big events going on then, especially the Napoleonic Wars.  My favorite heroes were soldiers. If a book was actually set with Wellington’s army in Spain or at the Congress of Vienna or in Brussels during the run-up to Waterloo, so much the better.  Those books were rare, but they gave me the same adventure and high stakes that I loved in my Sunfires.

The Sergeant’s Lady is a good bit sexier than the books I cut my romance-reading teeth on, but other than that, if you tossed my favorite Sunfires in a blender with my favorite trad Regencies, you’d get something very like The Sergeant’s Lady.  Aristocratic heroine and common hero finding love and adventure in a dangerous world, but also having to defy the strict social conventions of the Regency.  And maybe it’s not all that surprising that I’m still telling the same kind of stories I fell in love with as a teen.

What about you?  Do you still look for stories that remind you of the books that sparked your love of reading and of romance?  And do you enjoy historicals that take on unusual settings and themes?  What are some of your favorites?  Or is there a unique setting you wish an author would try?

Pick-Up lines and Talk Dirty to Me

Image and video hosting by TinyPic GINNY: Hello, Carina Readers! We know you are filthy dirty out there. Don’t blush, we’re dirty too! In fact, if you harness the power of two scarily filthy minds like ours you get one great result – the steamy, dreamy next installment of the Dirty Laundry Series “Talk Dirty To Me“.

INEZ: Either that or an extended stay in a quiet, restful place with nice young men in white coats and softly padded rooms. *looks at Ginny* Padding? Uhm, Ginny, did you get a new bra because those puppies are looking mighty perky there.

GINNY: Hush. You see, Inez Kelley and I (Ginny Glass for those of you who haven’t read COIN-OPERATED yet – and shame on you!) are co-authors of the new Dirty Laundry book. We panted…err…slaved over this one like mad women.

INEZ: Mad women? *snort* only if mad can be described as incredibly turned on by a fictitious English Professor with a silver tongue . And speaking of turned on…  That’s a nice shirt, Ginny. Can I talk you out of it?

GINNY: *sends Inez a dirty look*

INEZ: *blows Ginny a kiss*

GINNY: Anyway, we churned out pages so hot that they stuck together even in a word document. We came up with a smart (if reserved) heroine, Nora, and an equally brainy (if a little naughty) professor, Jarod.

INEZ: Basically, he wanted to bang her and she was skittish. Then he started falling for her and well, he had backed himself into a verbal corner by that point. *eyes Ginny* Will you marry me for just one night?

GINNY: Ahem… Nora thinks chemistry is all equation. Jarod wants to show her how triple X her X-chromosomes can get when mixed with a little good old fashioned dirty-talk.

INEZ: *wiggles eyebrows at Ginny* Chickie, if you want dirty talk, I could describe the hundred and one ways I’d make you scre—

GINNY: Stop that! *Smacks at Inez* I am trying to be professional here!

INEZ: A professional? Hawt damn, what do you charge by the hour? Do you take VISA?

GINNY: *ignoring Inez* Jarod’s a big talker – especially through the anonymity of a phone line. Sure, it’s a little white lie, but who’s it going to hurt? Nora’s lost something and Jarod’s going to help her find what she really needs.

INEZ: I got what you need right here, chickie-love.

GINNY: PUT THAT AWAY, WE’RE IN PUBLIC! *rolls her eyes*

As I was saying, in celebration of TALK DIRTY TO ME’s release and the awesomeness that is the Dirty Laundry Series, we’re having a contest! How do you enter? Simple. Tweet your BEST pick up line/dirty talk (funny, serious, whatever!) using the hashtag #DLWin and repost in this blog’s comment section. Contest will run until midnight.

INEZ: Oooh midnight, the witching hour… and I know you have the magic touch. Touch me, Ginny.

GINNY: I’m going to touch you with a paddle if you don’t stop!

INEZ: Promise? *bats eyelashes*

GINNY: AARRGG!!! Prizes are as follows:

1st place (BEST pick-up line/dirty talk) – A very naughty Dirty Laundry Basket. No details (because the surprise is half the fun!) but let’s just say that this basket is enough to get you softened, lathered and rinsed in shivery good ways! Batteries WILL be included! Goodies, along with a copy of TDTM and C/O in winner’s choice of formats.

2nd place – Copies of both TALK DIRTY TO ME and COIN-OPERATED in winner’s choice of formats

3rd place – Copy of TALK DIRTY TO ME in winner’s choice of formats

Inez and I will pick our favorites to win!

INEZ: Remember….TALK DIRTY TO ME… It’s not the size of the verbs, it’s how you use them.

GINNY: I cannot believe you would embarrass me like that. *cracks Inez on the ass* Just wait until I get you home!

INEZ: *bows head to hide grin* Yes, Mistress.

Everyone has something that strikes a note of fear in them. Some people are afraid of spiders, others of sharks. Some people cannot look out a window above ground level, others refuse to open a closet door. Things from our childhood often shape what we fear. The monster under the bed still can make a 50-year-old man’s heart pound.

For me, somewhere, a single image must have been branded so deeply in my subconscious that I don’t recall it. I do now though. My twins are six and fascinated with the TV shows I grew up with: Andy Griffith, Scooby Doo, Happy Days and the Banana Splits. One day last week, I accidently hit my DVR button and an episode of Banana Splits popped up. The segment was Danger Island. I stopped and stared.

First, this live-action segment always seemed out of place and too frightening for children who had just watched cartoon versions of Arabian Knights and The Three Musketeers and watched costumed muppet characters named Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky. The premise of Danger Island was a little dorky, there was the token girl, the token hot guy and the token monkey-chattering idiot who did all the dangerous stuff. The island was beautiful but treacherous. The villains were a tribe of native cannibalistic headhunters named the Skeleton Men.

*lightbulb*

The villains in SALOME AT SUNRISE are the Skullmen, a band of wrongly-freed murderers with some really nasty habits. Like Danger Island, my bad guys have painted skeletons on their skin (mine are tattoos actually). I have no conscious memory of ever being afraid of this show, barely have any memory of it at all, but there I sat, staring at the dumbed-down version of my villains.Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I guess it makes sense. Richard Donner directed it and went on to direct such classics as Superman, Goonies, and Lethal Weapon. He knew how to tap into those primal things in everyone, whether it is hope or fear. I almost felt ashamed but then realized, nope, not gonna happen. I created my bad guys in a way that I find horrifying and evil.

Still, I will give credit where credit is due, even if it was because of an unconscious influence. I tip my hat to Sid and Marty Krofft and Richard Donner for your vision of the Skeleton men. Yours are entertaining children to this day. Mine are more adult, slightly sexual and completely evil. My Skullmen would eat the Skeleton Men for lunch with a pickle…literally.

I AM THE CHEESE!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The cheese stands alone

The cheese stands alone

Hi-Ho, the derry-o

The cheese stands alone

Every schoolchild in America has sung those words but I can honestly say that I am the cheese. I stand alone. Or rather, SALOME AT SUNRISE does. Last year, I wrote and sold a fantasy romance titled Myla by Moonlight. Readers loved the world I created, the characters that lived there and asked for more. I resisted. I was not a series writer, had no intentions of becoming a series writer.

Ate those words with a fork, yes I did. Apparently Bryton, a secondary in that story, heard these requests and ‘lo and behold started whispering in my ear. “No,” I said. “No way. The story is finished.”

“Oh yeah?” he replied (because he is a smart ass who has to have the last word ALWAYS) “Then why did you leave that big open minefield waiting to explode?”

Say what? I went back to the story and damned if that little turd wasn’t right. Everything I needed for a second story was right there! Ground work, plot beginnings, set up, the whole kit and caboodle. Fine, so I wrote his story, Salome’s story. But I wanted to be very sure that ANYONE who read it didn’t feel cheated or lost if they hadn’t read the first story.

Salome at Sunrise is a completely stand alone book. It doesn’t need to stand on the shoulders of a previous story. The world is completely contained in that one book. I even made sure I closed it out with no hidden landmines, no dangling threads. This was it.

I am not a series writer.

I am the CHEESE!Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I stand alone!

I mean, Salome at Sunrise does.

And uhm *looks around sheepishly* I may or may not be writing the third book now. But that is it, I swear! A trilogy is not a series. I am NOT a series writer.

*hanging my head* I am sooooooo screwed.

Salome is that spell. A bird-shifter, she can harness the earth’s breeze and take the form of a beautiful, innocent woman. Her challenge is to harness Bryton’s pain and guide him to peace. She entrances and irritates him, tempting Bryton from his mission. Even as he gives in to the passion between them, Bryton insists on mounting a solo attack on the brigands’ compound, and Salome fears her love won’t be enough to save him…

I was a closet romance writer…

 mce_href=romance novel,author,Rebecca E. Grant,love,intrigue
What is the one word that will get the attention of most people faster than anything else?

SEX. Am I right?

Just the word elicits a deluge of feelings, images, memories, and the anticipatory thrill of future pleasures…

LOVE is a close second.

Yet, even though these things are uppermost in our minds—or at least up there with the uppermost—we don’t go around telling business associates and casual acquaintances about our love lives or our sexual fantasies… even though we all have them, right?

We don’t rent out billboard space to announce our latest lover, or go on Lenno to talk about the Kama Sutra position we discovered that drives us wild.

For all that sex and love demand so much of our attention and hold our curiosity, it’s still very private.

That’s why I was a closet romance writer.

LIBERTY STARR is my debut romance novel and I’m thrilled that Carina Press has selected it to be a part of their launch. Since you and I have not met one another before, I thought this blog would be a great place to open my heart—to invite you in—and share my journey from closet romance writer to romance author. I’ll do my best to make it fun.

I’m a romantic…

The first time I saw the snow-covered Rockies I was nearly knocked out by what a romantic backdrop they made. (I may have been slightly influenced by the fact that I was utterly in love at the time.) Then there’s the White House. The first time I saw it I was struck by the romanticism of the many lives—leaders—drama—and life-changing decisions that structure has given shelter to (again, quite possibly I was influenced by the tall drink of water whose arm was around me at the time).

Even as far back as when I was six or seven and tried on my first pair of roller skates—the kind that clipped to the bottom of my shoes—I was instantly enamored with them because I realized just how fast those skates would take me down the street to see Kenny, the love of my life.

Romance is everywhere and in nearly everything.

I devoured romance novels as a teenager and never stopped loving them. One day about twenty years ago, I decided I would write a romance novel. The story just poured out of me, and when I was done I called it When the Time is Right. I sent it off to a number of publishers and received a fistful of rejections. Not long ago, I ran across a musty-smelling copy of that old manuscript and laughed all the way through it because it was so genuinely awful. Really, the only thing to do was enjoy how sweetly terrible it was, and be grateful that no publisher had ever thought ‘the time was right’.

A few months later, I wrote a second novel, Maestro’s Melody. This one was only slightly better than the first. I loved that story so much, I tried to get it right for about five years, but the end result was still rejection. So, not only was the time not right, but the melody was flat as well.

I did all of this in secret …

… because my personal experience is that it takes a certain amount of maturity to be able say to people, “I write romances. They’re intimate, hot, tender, and where appropriate, not so tender. They’re filled with intrigue, laughter, hope and provide an opportunity to disappear into the sheer fantasy of the moment. To marvel at the miracle of love, and the way one human body folds into another.”

Twenty years ago I wasn’t mature or confident enough to do this—and so I wrote in secret.

Life happened and one day the calendar told me that twenty years of family, friends, education and career had come and gone. I had long since abandoned the idea of ever becoming a romance author, until a year ago, when the urge snuck up behind me and caught me in its net once again. Intrigued with this long lost idea, the first thing I did was rewrite Maestro’s Melody (still in secret) and give it a new title. But now I was writing in secret because being twenty years older and at least a tad wiser, not only was I unsure that I could look anyone in the eye and be mature enough to say, “I write romances,” I also didn’t know if I could produce a book that was worthy of the romance genre.

Pleased with my effort to rewrite Maestro’s Melody, I (secretly) took a romance writing course…

Whooooooie but that was hard! During a number of painful and very public classroom critiques, the two author instructors patiently explained to me that I was not ‘there’ yet.

The verdict: great plot but my writing style was too stiff. I was going to have to loosen it up if I wanted to appeal to today’s readers. This chased me even deeper into the closet while (in secret) I tried everything I could think of to loosen up… but I just seemed to get stiffer.

Finally, on the last day of class, I was sitting in the back of the room when I heard a voice whisper into my ear, “You could write erotica. It will act as a lubricant, and your voice will stop sticking.”

My eyes popped wide and I nearly choked because (as you’ve probably guessed by now) if I was a stiff writer (and still writing in secret), the probability that I’d be comfortable writing erotica was a long shot. But that voice was indubitably my muse—and who was I to argue with her?

Two days later, I found a private corner. There, hunched over my computer I wrote a short piece of erotica…

… and then a longer one, and an even longer one. Every sentence shocked me. Not because I think there’s anything wrong with erotica, but because I had no idea it was in me… and there was nothing stiff about my writing … at least not about the dialogue anyway!

The irony was not lost on me that here I was, still a closet romance writer and now I’d gone even deeper into the closet to (secretly) write erotica as a way to loosen up my writing style.

One day, my muse whispered, “Okay, now it’s time to write a contemporary cowboy romance.”

“No way! What do I know about cowboys?”

Not bothering to answer, she said, “And it will be set in the fictional town of Stone Hill, Colorado at the foot of the Rockies.”

“But I’ve only seen the Rockies once… and didn’t you hear me when I said I don’t know anything about cowboys?!”

“Trust me. This will be a great way to combine heat with humor and intrigue. You’ll love doing it.”

So, every spare moment I could find, I was in my darkened corner hunching over the keyboard writing (in secret) a contemporary cowboy romance with erotic elements. When the story was done, I asked a select group of people to (secretly) critique the book. They gave me a boatload of helpful feedback, and joked that their partners were grateful to me for having written the book.

That was the day I stopped writing romances in secret…

… because I began to understand what it was that spoke so to me about romance novels, and what I wanted to create for readers. To me, the romance novel is a reminder of who we are as human beings—human souls who live and love on this earth—who experience through love and sex, just how divine it is to be alive.

I hope you’ll check back later today. I plan to share a bit about the characters of LIBERTY STARR, some excerpts, and what it was like the day Angela James from Carina Press, called!

In the event it’s not obvious… I am thrilled beyond words to be part of Carina’s launch!

My History in Mystery

J. Wachowski. First book. First blog. First Twit. (You never forget your first Twit.) I took the scenic route on my way to published Mystery Author. Stopped and read a few books on the way…

Age 9: Terrible Flu. Fever for 8 days. Can’t get out of bed. Neighbor drops off her entire collection of Trixie Belden mysteries. I read one and a half books a day, finishing the entire series (vols.1-13) before returning to school with a new passion: solving crimes. (If only I had rich friends and a cute honey- colored bob! )

Age 14: Trapped in a remote location on family vacation, I discover piles of paperback novels squirreled away in my Uncle’s forgotten bookcase—fabulously trashy ‘60’s editions of John D. Macdonald’s Travis McGee series. I read them secretly every night shrouded by mosquito netting. Family wonders why I look so tired by end of vacation. Several books mysteriously find their way into my luggage.

Age 20: I attend a class taught by Stuart Kaminsky. Gobble up his Chicago stories. Sara Paretsky is next. Am stunned by the realization that my hometown could ever be cool enough to host a mystery novel. Father Andrew Greeley’s mysteries knock me upside the head with an eraser for my lack of hometown pride.

Age 29: Devour Robert Parker’s entire Spencer series while holding nursing baby with one hand and book with the other. Sleep deprived and groggy, I stumble next into Dennis Lehane’s Patrick Kenzie. Consider moving the family to Boston in hopes of meeting Spenser or Kenzie. Husband frowns on this idea.

Age 35: Maddy O’Hara introduces herself to my subconscious. I begin to write my own mystery….
And the rest, as they say, is history.

Tell me about your history in mystery. What books did you love as a kid, as a teen, as a grown-up?

J. Wachowski lives in the Midwest, where the winters build character, with her family who are all characters. In Plain View is her first novel. You can find her on JWachowski.com, Facebook and Twitter.

Countdown to Carina: Ginny Glass is “Coin Operated!”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Greetings, Carina Blog readers! Ginny Glass here.

Today, I’m excited to be sharing details of my upcoming Carina Press         release, Coin Operated.

Coin Operated is the first in Carina’s Dirty Laundry themed series and it premieres on launch week, Monday, June 7th.  Dirty Laundry is the spicy hot series all about the secret  little things that lurk in the hearts and minds of our heroes and heroines. Fantasies, crushes, bedroom adventures, taboos, revelations to make you blush or even potentially break a heart.

The original Dirty Laundry concept started at Romance Divas and I ended up invited in on the idea by fellow writer, snark/smut enthusiast and dear friend Inez Kelley. I loved the idea of Dirty Laundry, the tension of a secret that could be dramatic, angsty, funny, sexy – anything you want!  More Dirty Laundry stories will follow, and you will want to keep up!

In Coin Operated, Elijah Elliot has a whopper of a secret. He is deeply, distractingly in lust with his business partner, Beatrix London.  The story follows not only the rise of their attraction to each other, but also Eli’s struggle with some dominant tendencies (his other dirty little secret.)

Bea’s secret is that she craves her deliciously handsome partner just as much as he craves her – in perfectly complimentary, slightly tied-up ways. Too bad Eli’s inhibitions are getting in the way of what could be some seriously spicy late nights at the office.

The conclusion of the book, set in a laundromat (of course!) uses one of the best story props I’ve ever written. What prop, you ask? Heated quarters.  This story was extremely fun to write and I hope it’ll be fun for you all to read.

As far as publishing with Carina Press, I can’t say enough positive things about the team of complete professionals that have made the process downright easy. The day I got the call from Angela James telling me that Carina wanted to buy this story and wanted in on the series – talk about making a girl’s day! I  encourage anyone looking to submit to get your manuscripts to Carina!

I’m edited by the amazing (and funny!) Deb Nemeth, who is a true gem.  A round of edits that included the question “can he be less of an a$$hole here?” pretty much told me she was a perfect fit for me.

My cover art is gorgeous, done by the talented Monika Krzewska at Spin Studio. I’m excited to see the cover work that will follow for the Dirty Laundry series books still to come!

I will be posting promo activities and excerpts from Coin Operated over the next few weeks, so be sure to follow me on twitter and check my website for the latest links, tidbits and maybe even a giveaway contest as launch day nears.

All the best and happy reading!

Hello to Ana and Jonas and the SIDE Team

Criminal Instinct by Kelly Lynn Parra

Five years in prison or five years working as an undercover agent?

Not the easiest choice for Ana Moreno, who has a history of B and E convictions and a problem with authority. But it’s a decision she and four other felons are willing to make to stay out of a jail cell.

When a deadly shipment of Ecstasy heads for San Francisco, Ana’s team is sent to stop it. Ana’s task: get close to the handsome and dangerous Jonas Saven, right-hand man of a suspected drug dealer with a deadly agenda. As Ana uncovers a web of secrets, betrayal and revenge, her heated attraction to Saven grows.

But with time running out to stop the dangerous drug lord, Ana must complete her mission—even if it costs her everything…

Welcome to Ana Moreno’s world of danger, street drugs, and revenge!

Let me give you a little background on the SIDE team.  SIDE—Secret Informant Drug Enforcement—is a group of undercover recruits gathered to work the streets to ferret out illegal street drug trafficking.  However, these are not any ordinary recruits—this small group consists of criminals working for the good guys for a change.

Instead of spending years behind bars, they trade in their sentencing working for a no-holds-bar boss named Sarge and his sidekick Jay-man.  Sarge knows the recruits’ deepest, darkest secrets and is willing to use them against his team to clean the streets of the filth of drugs.

Sarge found Ana Moreno AKA Switch bruised and beaten with a history of petty crime and B and E arrests.  He knows she’s tough and will do anything to stay out of a cell.  He chose the following team for the same reasons:

~ Billy AKA Jax, a street fighter and jack of all trades when it comes to crime.

~ Aaron AKA Romeo, loves the ladies and their…money.

~ Julia AKA Digit, behind her beauty is an Einstein brain and way a with a computer that almost let her retire in style.

~ Paul AKA Skates, the youngest of the team, is like the Yellow Pages to the San Francisco street crime.

But Sarge has one question:  Can these recruits pull together to work as team or will they always merely look out for themselves?

The SIDE team is put to the test when a deadly shipment of Ecstasy heads for San Francisco. The program already has a bad rep and this is the team’s chance to show they can make a difference and actually do some good before the higher ups decide to pull the plug on the program.

The leading suspects?  A dangerous San Francisco street gang called The Black Dragons, a drug kingpin named Salvador Tyler, and Raymond Brooks, a businessman with strong Israeli drug connections and his right-hand man, Jonas Saven.

Jonas Saven is a complicated man, driven by a dark past, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy as all get out.  Here is a small excerpt where the reader first meets Jonas:

Thump—thump—thump.

Jonas Saven attacked the hanging punch bag with smooth, deliberate jabs.  Perspiration beaded down his naked chest.  Rotating his hips to the right, he pivoted on the ball of his left foot, bent his elbow, and shoved his weight into a lateral punch to the lower bag.  It crashed back toward him, he feinted to his right.  He countered, the force of his punch so hard the impact vibrated straight through the padded glove.

“I’m telling you, Jonas, it’s all his fault.”

Not now.  Sweat leaked into his eyes.  He blinked it away.

Thump—thump—thump.

“If it weren’t for you, where would he be?”

Jonas bounced on the balls of his feet, shifting his weight from foot to foot.  After beating the bag for an hour, the muscles in his arms and torso were already strained.  The slow burn that meant his limit was near.

Focusing on the bag, he pushed on.

Thump, thump—thump—thump.

“Jonas, are you hearing me?”

He glanced at his sister, observed her pace back and forth in front of his office couch, her long legs eating up space.  She halted, pointing her forefinger at him.

He swung out again.

Thump—thump.

“You’re the strength behind the gallery, the club, the operations.”

His gaze jerked to her.  His arms fell to his sides, damp shoulders rising with aggravated breaths.

Swallowing past his parched throat, he said, “What do you know about the operations?”

“Enough to know that you’re the one who takes care of everything.”

No, she didn’t know the truth.  “Kara, I’ve told you before. Ray runs everything fine.  Last night…”  He paused.  “Last night was out of his hands.”

She scoffed.  “Is that what he’s telling you?”

Jonas rubbed the sweat off his forehead with his forearm.  “When’s this obsession—”

“Pleease.

“—you have with Ray going to end?  There isn’t anyone I trust more.”  He looked at her point-blank when she flipped brunette layers of hair over her shoulder.  “Understood?”

She sneered, but even that disdainful look couldn’t mar her beautiful features.  “Don’t try to lay one of your commands on me this time, Jonas—because it’s not going to work.  Besides, you’re not my father.”

The blow hit its target.  He merely blinked, feeling his face go blank.

“Jonas, I didn’t mean—”

Not saying a word, he held up a gloved hand.

She sighed.  “You just make me so angry when you don’t listen.  Ray Brooks got someone killed last night and you could be next.”

Stevie.

His fault, no one else’s.  He whirled.

Thump—thump—thump—thump—thump.

Not just any woman can match this man’s strength, both mentally and physically.  But one tough as nails street narc could fit the role:

Ana flew through the air, landing on the training mat, her sweaty shoulders scraping against rubber.  Damn it!

“Up now, now!”

Gritting her teeth, she rolled to her feet and crouched, hands out, eyes straight on her opponent.  A few hairs escaped her headband, clinging annoyingly to her cheek, and sweat ran down her neck into her sports bra. Her muscles ached from two hours of physical training.

They circled each other.  Jax’s pale eyes never left hers, his hands out and ready.

“Rush him!”

“He’s a mountain,” she muttered.

“Do it!”

Her eyebrows furrowed, but she wasn’t dumb enough to glance at Sarge, giving Jax an open advantage.  Jax’s codename was based on a video game character with arms made of steel, steel that could pretty much pound her to a pulp.  His shaggy blond head was damp and his bare chest glistened with perspiration.  The guy’s right arm was solid with tatts, the left spotted with various designs, and his long legs were covered with gray sweat pants.

Jax gave a slow smile, taunting her with his thick fingers to come at him.

“I don’t give a damn how small you are—or how big he is—rush him.”

Fine. She feinted to her right, ducked low, and rammed her left shoulder into his hard stomach, wincing as the impact radiated down her back.

Jax’s footing slid on the mat and then dug in.  Bands of armor gripped around her slick waist, hauling her upside down, slamming her spandex-covered butt against his solid torso.

She hooked her legs over Jax’s broad shoulders, bending them on either side of his neck and squeezing her knees toward each other.

“Did I ever tell you I like my Latinas spicy and hot?” Jax grunted above her.

“Did I ever tell you I couldn’t give a flying f*ck?”  Blood rushed to her head.  She pressed harder with her knees, performed a full sit up, and aimed for a throat hit with her knuckles.

Jax’s eyes flickered.  He released her waist, gripped her biceps and shot her off of him like a damn slingshot.  She flew, hit padding, and tried to roll.

Too late.  Jax landed on her, knocking her air out of her lungs.  He grabbed one arm, trapping it against the mat.  His musky deodorant filled her nostrils, heavy chest pushing against hers.

Son of a—

“Pin!”

She sucked in air, coughed.  “B*tch.

Jonas and Ana should have fun fighting it out once they meet, don’t you think?

From Adult Reader…to Carina Press!

Hello, Carina Press Friends! I’m Kelly Lynn Parra and I will be debuting my first Romantic Suspense Criminal Instinct with Carina Press in June.  It is such an honor to be part of Carina’s launch and to be chatting with you.  I thought I’d kick off today by sharing my journey from reader to Carina…

What’s a girl who once lived to draw and paint, who found school reading a chore, doing writing novels?

Good question, and one I still sometimes hear from friends and family.  You see, it wasn’t until I was round with my first baby–trying to entertain myself during maternity leave–that I was given a book that went on to change my life’s path.

Now this wasn’t just any book, although I did not know this at the time.  It was a romance novel, obviously loved by someone else, yellowed from time, and bent around the edges.

From the first page, I was swept away to Ireland. Where I quickly learned more about those two main characters than I knew about some of my own family members.  I rooted for this man and woman, envisioned them in my mind so clearly that it seemed they had to be real. Yes, I was pregnant, I needed my sleep, but how could I not find out what would happen next?

Soon, I finished that book, closing it with a contented sigh.  I was in love.  Yes, I was in love with romance, and with Nora Roberts!

I went straight to the bookstore and waddled through the aisles until I found the other two books in the series.  The manager of the store was a Nora Roberts fan too. She showed me entire shelves of her books and backlist. *Instant reader bonding took place*

Can you take a guess of the trilogy?

The Born In trilogy:  Born in Fire, Born in Ice, and Born in Shame.   I did not know at the time, but I had started the series out of order.

The first magical romance I read was Born in Ice.

And there I became a voracious and dedicated romance reader.  Once I worked my way through all the Nora Roberts backlist I could find, I read her J.D. Robb books and fell in love all over again!  I think my husband thought I lost my mind.  From there, I read many Harlequin’s series books and that was when I read an author bio about a mom who was staying at home with her children and had become a romance writer.

My son was born and I continued reading more than ever.  My little home was becoming packed with as many books and bookshelves as Pampers and bibs!  So the idea of idea of writing while I stayed at home with him seemed like a daring, but doable venture.

Maybe just for fun.  Fun turned into passion.

I joined Romance Writers of America and on-line sister chapters.  I researched and took on-line workshops.  This passion had soared into a dream of publication!  I think my family humored me, sure, write your stories, they said.  Well, I did and I met other great aspiring writers on-line.  We learned to support each other and share our experiences.  I found a fabulous critique partner and wrote a very rough first book called Deadly Adam.  Then I met a wonderful mentor on-line who told me I had a good voice and I should write the next draft of this book to the best of my ability and submit it to agents.  It took me a year to rewrite it, and then it was time to query.  Many rejections and two offers of representation I had an agent. After another year of many rejections from publishers and rewrites, Deadly Adam sold to Harlequin Bombshell.

Yes, yes, YES!!  I couldn’t believe it!! My hard work had finally paid off. My dream would come true!!

Meanwhile, I had started writing young adult stories. Reflecting on my own teen years, there were never any books I was interested in during school.  I wanted to write something kids could relate to today.  I wrote Graffiti Girl and it sold, meanwhile I received some bad news.  The Bombshell line closed its doors. My first book, which I spent nearly two years writing and a year trying to sell, would not be published.

It was devastating not only to me, but the other Bombshell writers for their unpublished stories.  I cried like a baby.  I had grown to love my characters Ana and Jonas, their faults and their good qualities after all this time with them. Yes, I would be published in young adult but it was tough to say goodbye to them.  I wiped my tears and continued to write.

So jump ahead a few years later.  I heard about this new and fresh e-press opening called Carina Press.  I thought about Deadly Adam.  I thought about Ana and Jonas, and I took a chance and submitted the novel after some sprucing up and gave it a new name of Criminal Instinct.   The day I received the good news email from Angela James my chest tightened and my eyes watered.

My first romance would finally be published.

Thank you, Carina Press, you helped a writer complete a long-sought-after journey. And in support of Carina, I will treat one visitor today to any pick of a Carina Press’s digital launch titles.  All you have to do to enter is leave a blog comment.

I hope when Criminal Instinct is released in June you’ll meet Ana and Jonas…  Stay tuned for my next post so I can introduce them to you.
